Benchmarks are a tool for educators to gauge their academic success. They generally take some form of “by the 4,8,12 grade students will...” Indian Education for All benchmarks are slightly different. The goal of Indian Education for All is not the replacement of current content but more of a content substitution within those disciplines. If your curriculum requires X, Y & Z can you locate a resource that covers XYZ and Native American studies? Reading a story and studying the grammar? Substitute some Native literature and kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. The program’s goal is not to add to the mountain of content educators must teach. The goal is to structure content creatively in order to cover additional information. In effect we strive to make the information we teach more efficient. What follows are links to OPI’s Indian Education for All benchmarks.
